About this Trip

This group trip will show you the landscapes and history of Northern Spain. You'll be cycling through the mountainous regions of Leon and Santiago, exploring medieval castles and the last outpost of Moorish culture.

Group Trip Breakdown

Day 1: Leon

You’ll be welcomed at the airport by one of our representatives and transferred to your hotel where you’ll be able to meet your fellow cyclists. Here you’ll do a bike fitting and enjoy a welcome dinner with the group.

Day 2: Leon To Astorga

On the second day, you’ll make your way to the region of La Maragateria where the mysterious Maragatos live - they're apparently the last Moors of Spain. You’ll cycle further to Astorga where you’ll come across a 15th-century cathedral and neo-gothic architecture. You can also visit the Museo del Chocolate and learn about the history of chocolate in the region, and maybe even eat some.

Day 3: Astorga To Cacabelos

After a hearty breakfast you’ll cycle to a traditional Maragatan village and learn more about the history of its inhabitants and their culture. On your way to ‘El Cruz de Ferro’, an iron cross-surrounded by a pile of rocks, you’ll cycle past the Montes de León and all of the small hamlets. Eventually you’ll arrive in the medieval town of Cacabelos, which is known for its wine production and impressive castle.

Day 4: Cacabelos To Cebreiro

On the fourth day, you’ll cycle to the region of Galicia and the quaint little hamlet of Cebreiro. Here you’ll see the straw-roofed stone houses called ‘Pallozas’, known for its cream cheese and also as a place of ‘miracles’. In the evening, you’ll enjoy a dinner with the group and a show afterwards.

Day 5: Cebreiro To Portomarin

You’ll cycle through the Galicia region and encounter locals who still speak the Gallego language that predates Spanish and Portuguese. The countryside and culture are very intriguing and steeped in fantasy, religion and superstition. From here you’ll cycle towards the Monastery of Samos, which is one of the most ancient monasteries in all of Spain, and to Portomarin high above the Miño River. In the evening, a traditional Paella dinner will await you.

Day 6: Portomarin To Galicia Country

On the sixth day you’ll cycle through more of the Galicia region. The villages in the region still use primitive tools and ancient techniques due to their lack of development, and this is quite a spectacle to see. You’ll cycle through the scenic landscapes until you reach a typical Galician Country Manor House, where you will stay for the night.

Day 7: Galicia Country To Santiago

Today the cycling trip is shorter to allow you more time to explore Santiago. The trip will take you around the town of Labacolla, an ancient pilgrims route, and onto Santiago. In Santiago, you’ll visit the pilgrimage site of Portico de Gloria, the Tree of Jesse and jewels that date back to the Middle Ages. For the remaining part of the day, your tour guides will show you the sights of Santiago. In the evening, you’ll enjoy a farewell dinner with the group.

Day 8: Departure

On the last day you'll be driven to the airport for your return flight.

Further Information

You’ll be sailing in style on the Lord of the Glens, a splendid Scottish cruise ship. It’s an elegant seafaring yacht that can sail through the Caledonian Canal but also sail the Atlantic. This will be an all LGBT trip of no more than 54 guests. Expect a Scottish breakfast every morning and nightly entertainment.
